Guy Hoare

Guy has been designing lighting for dance, theatre and opera for about 20 years.

Although a freelance designer based in London since 1998, he works throughout the UK and internationally.He designed the lighting for Seeta Patel’s Something Then, Something Now in 2014 at Sadler’s Wells; since then the show has been presented at the South Bank Centre in London and the Sri Ram Centre in Delhi. Other designs for dance include To See The World While The Light Lasts at Malmö Opera, Christopher Bruce’s Dream, Akram Khan’s Chotto Desh, and several pieces for Shobana Jeyasingh.

He designed the lighting for Arthur Pita’s The Metamorphosis and Mark Bruce’s Dracula which won the South Bank Award for Dance in 2012 and 2014 respectively. Many of his dance works have toured internationally; The Metamorphosis, Mischief, and Havana Rakatan have all played in New York. Rafael Bonachela’s piece The Land of Yes and The Land of No – which was originally created in the UK – was remounted in Australia by Sydney Dance Company; Ben Wright’s This Moment Is Your Life was remounted in Sweden by Skånes Dansteater; and Henri Oguike’s Frontline was taken into the repertory of Italian and Portuguese companies after many years of touring in the UK and abroad. He has also designed work for Ben Ash, Mayuri Boonham, Robert Clark, Theo Clinkard, James Cousins, Dan Daw, Laila Diallo, Robin Dingemans, Eleesha Drennan, Darren Ellis, Jo Fong, Ruth Gibson, Rachel Lopez de la Nieta, Ludovic Ondiviela, and Nuno Silva.

Current projects include Not Today’s Yesterday for Seeta Patel; Spectrum and Something About Wilderness for Skånes Dansteater in Malmö; This Bright Field for Theo Clinkard; two new works for Gandini Juggling; and a new piece for Mark Bruce Company to premiere in 2018.

In 2010, he was nominated for Best Lighting Designer at the TMA Awards (for A Christmas Carol); He has been nominated three times at the Knight of Illumination Awards – in 2009, 2012 and 2013 (in Opera for The Magic Flute; in Dance for The Metamorphosis; and in TV for the filming of The Metamorphosis)

Guy is an Associate Artist at Wilton’s Music Hall.
